Details

You are invited to a Research and Teaching seminar in ANNU 141 for the Assistant/Associate Professor in Meat Science/Muscle Biology faculty position in the department of Animal Biosciences/ OAC. Following the presentation, you will have an opportunity to engage in a collaborative discussion during the Q&A session.

Our next candidate, Con-Ning Yen, will be giving a presentation titled “The Mitochondria in Skeletal Muscle: Friend or Foe?”.

Abstract:

Skeletal muscle metabolism plays an important role in meat animal growth and impacts both feed efficiency and ultimate meat quality characteristics.  This research will document mitochondrial characteristics and function across meat animal species differing in feed efficiency and feeding regimes.  Finally, the role of mitochondria across the lifespan of fast-twitch muscle will be explored using a novel skeletal muscle-specific knockout mouse model.  The results of these studies suggest that mitochondria are a viable target for increased efficiency.

Bio: Con-Ning Yen grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina. She earned her B.S. in Biological Sciences from Virginia Tech in 2017. She is currently a fifth year Ph.D. Candidate and studying in the field of muscle biology under Dr. David Gerrard. Her research is primarily composed of understanding the role of the mitochondria in skeletal muscle during animal growth and development. Con-Ning aims to contribute to the muscle biology field in order to further the knowledge of muscle development to improve lean accretion in livestock species.
