CGIL Seminar - Reducing methane emissions in ruminants: Genomic and metagenomic tools

We are happy to have Dr. Birgit Gredler-Grandl, visiting us next week from Wageningen University & Research presenting a special CGIL seminar for us on Wednesday, July 29th, 2026. The seminar will begin at 2:00 PM EDT/EST in person in room ANNU 141 and on the virtual platform Microsoft Teams. The presentation title is: “Reducing methane emissions in ruminants: Genomic and metagenomic tools”. 

Speaker Biography: Dr. Birgit Gredler-Grandl is a Senior Scientist and Project Leader at Wageningen University & Research (Animal Breeding & Genomics Centre) in the Netherlands. She obtained her doctoral degree in Animal Breeding and Genetics from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU). She is a quantitative geneticist specializing in the development of genetic and genomic tools for sustainable livestock production. Having previously worked with breeding organizations, she has extensive experience in developing and implementing routine national genetic evaluations. Her core research interests include feed efficiency and enteric methane emissions in dairy cattle, as well as the use of novel phenotypes, such as rumen microbiome data, to improve the sustainability and resilience of livestock through genetic selection. Birgit is co-coordinator of the Global Methane Genetics (GMG) initiative, a global collaboration working to accelerate the implementation of low-methane breeding worldwide. She also serves as Chair of the ICAR Feed & Gas Working Group, leading international efforts to harmonize methane and feed intake phenotyping and support the development of globally comparable methane breeding evaluations.
