Success at the 2024 ASAS-CSAS-WSASAS Annual Meeting in Calgary!
This past week wrapped up another successful ASAS-CSAS-WSASAS meeting for the research labs from Animal Biosciences!
The Shoveller Lab was well represented in the CSAS MSc oral competition with Samantha Hartwig taking home first place for her work on equine nutrition and Stephanie Gwynne coming in second for her work on cat nutrition. Although not in the student competition, Rachel Strassburger also did an amazing job presenting her work on exploring fear in client-owned dogs. In the Companion Animal Section, Hannah Godfrey took home second place and Coco Zhang took third in the student competition also for their work on cat nutrition.
In the PhD oral presentation category, Lauren Fletcher from the Li lab won first place for her presentation on the sow microbiome while Titouan Chapelain from the Steele lab came in second for his work on health and growth of Holstein and Holstein crosses.
The Baes lab also came up big with Emily Lomas winning the MSc poster presentation award for her work on the genetic parameters of muscle activity in Turkeys with Avalon Phillips taking second for her studies on the significance of colostrum quality on feed efficiency in Canadian Holstein calves.
At the undergraduate level, Alyssa Lini and Ryan van Diggelen were awarded CSAS Undergraduate and Diploma Academic Achievement Awards in recognition of superior academic achievement during the course of their studies.
Along with the great student success, Professor and Canada Research Chair Dr. Trevor DeVries was named the recipient of the CSAS Award in Nutrition or Meat Sciences. The award is given to members to encourage excellence in teaching, research or extension in the fields of nutrition and meat science at the provincial, federal or international level.
